INTRODUCTION:
Health care service providers are work to augment efforts to protect the public from the impact of epidemic events while constituting the major health care task force, nurses are frequently tasked with fronting the response to an infectious disease outbreak. Given the crucial role of nurses in the management of prevailing epidemic the constituent of their preparedness in epidemic events should be identified. Thus nursing students should have good body of knowledge regarding Nipah virus disease and its management in order to provide effective and comprehensive care to the patients1.
Nipah virus is a zoonotic virus which can be transmitted between people and from other animals to people. The infected people shows a range of illness from asymptomatic (subclinical) infection to acute respiratory illness and fatal encephalitis. The virus can also cause severe disease in animals such as pigs resulting in significant economic loss for farmers. Although Nipah virus has caused only a few known outbreaks in Asia, it infects a wide range of animals and causes severe disease and death in people making it public health concern2
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
A study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding Nipah virus disease and its management among nursing students in selected College at Mysuru.
OBJECTIVES:
1 To assess the knowledge regarding the Nipah virus disease and its management among nursing students.
2 To assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding the Nipah virus disease and its management among nursing students.
3 To find out association between post-test knowledge level regarding Nipah virus disease and its management among nursing students with their selected personal variables.
NEED FOR THE STUDY:
Nipah virus is an emerging and serious viral zoonotic disease that carries with it high case fatality rate. The natural host of the virus are fruit bats of Pteropodidae family, pteropus genus. According to world health organization(WHO), there is no apparent disease in fruit bat. It was first recognized in a large outbreak in a village named Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia and Singapore in May 19993.
276 cases were reported, the vast majority (93%) being pig farmers on people who had contact with pigs. The disease presented as encephalitis and 4 out of 10 people died. It is theorized that the pigs got infected consuming partially bat eaten fruits that ended up in a pig sty. Pigs were the intermediate host in this case. However, subsequent outbreaks had no intermediate host. No new outbreaks have been reported in Malaysia since 1999. Outbreaks have occurred in India in the year of 2001and 2007(West Bengal)
and 2018and 2019(Kerala), while Bangladesh saw outbreaks /cases every year from 2001 to 20154.
HYPOTHESES:
1. H1: There will be a significant difference between the mean pre-test and post-test knowledge score regarding Nipah virus disease and its management among nursing students.
2. H 2: There will be a significant association between level of post-test knowledge score regarding Nipah virus disease and its management among Nursing students with their selected personal variables.
METHODOLOGY:
RESEARCH APPROACH:
Research approach implies a set of methods and technique for designing a study or collecting analyzing a data (quantitative data). The evaluative approach is used in this study. The main objective of the study is to assess the effectiveness of administering structured teaching programe among Nursing students.
RESEARCH DESIGN:
Research design selected for the study is pre experimental, one group pre-test and post-test design.
VARIABLES OF THE STUDY:
Independent Variable: Structured teaching programme
Dependent Variable: Knowledge of Nursing students regarding Nipah virus disease.
SETTING OF THE STUDY:
In this study the setting was in St. JOSEPH Nursing College in Mysuru.
POPULATION:
Population is the entire set of individuals or objects having common characteristics selected for a research study. In the present study population comprises of Nursing students studying in St. Joseph College of Nursing, Mysuru.
RESULTS:
1. Findings related to selected personal variables of nursing students
Findings in the present study shows that age group of the nursing students ranges from 17 – 19 years. The majority of the nursing students 29 (96.7%) belongs to female and 1(3.33%) belongs to male group. Majority of them belongs to Christian 18 (60%) and Hindus 10(33.3%) and rest of them belongs to Muslim 2(6.7%).
The study reveals that most of them belongs to nuclear family 27(90%) and others belongs to joint family 3(10%). 2 (6.7%) of nursing students belongs to the family with the monthly income less than Rs 3000 and 10(33.3%) have an income between Rs 300- 6000 and other 13(43.3%) have an income between Rs 6000- 10000 and rest 5(16.7%) belongs to a family of monthly income of Rs 10000. All nursing students are maintaining hygiene condition in house and its surroundings.
23(76.7%) of nursing students doesn’t have presence of Nipah infection in the nearby places but 7 (23.3%) have. All the nursing students 30 (100%) doesn’t have any old uncleaned well.
21(70%) of nursing students lives in rural area and 9 (30%) lives in urban area. Among 30 nursing students 3 (10%) have attended classes related to Nipah infection previously while 27(90%) didn’t
2. Findings related to comparison related to pre test and post test knowledge regarding Nipah virus disease and its management among nursing students:
The findings shows that all the students had poor knowledge in the pre-test and with the mean score of 9.33 with standard deviation ±1.64, ranged from 5-14 The post test findings showed that both good and average knowledge of nursing students regarding Nipah virus disease and its management was 50% And none of them have poor knowledge with mean score of 19.6 and standard deviation of ±1.18, ranged from 16-27.
3. Findings related to effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding Nipah virus disease and its management by using knowledge questionnaire.
The mean difference between the mean pre-test and mean post-test knowledge score was 10.27 with the standard deviation difference for ±0.46. The paired ‘t (29)’ =23.25 which was significant at 0.05 level of significance and it could be inferred that the post-test knowledge scores of nursing students who attended the structured teaching programe regarding Nipah virus disease and its management was significantly higher than their mean pre-test knowledge score. So the researcher accepted the research hypothesis.
4. Findings related to association of level of knowledge of nursing students with their personal variables:
The computed chi square value for association between post-test level of knowledge of nursing students was found to be statistically significant at 0.05 level for type of family with a value of 7.70 and family income per month with a value of 9.28. But other personal variables like age (1.53), religion (0.52), students who have attended education class regarding Nipah virus, Zikah virus (0.93), presence of Nipah infection in nearby places (0.36) and place of residence (0.69) were found not to be statistically significant at 0.05 level of significance. So the researcher partially accept the research hypothesis and partially reject the null hypothesis.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1 A Similar study can be conducted among pig farmers
2 A similar study can be conducted by adopting experimental des.
3 A comparative study can be conducted on knowledge regarding Nipah virus disease and its management among nursing students, non nursing students, art students to gain knowledge regarding epidemic diseases.
4 A similar survey may be replicated on a large sample for better generalization of result
CONCLUSION:
The findings of present study concluded that the structured teaching programme regarding Nipah virus disease and its management was very effective in increasing knowledge of nursing students at 0.05 level of significance hence the study gave the evidence that structured teaching programme regarding Nipah virus disease and its management can improve knowledge of nursing and it will help to change in their day to day life.
